Representative Janelle Bynum's Letter to the Governor concerning equitable access to mental health resources
- April 23, 2020
Thank you Representative Janelle Bynum for your letter to Governor Brown concerning equitable access to mental health resources for Oregon's marginalized, poor, and rural communities.
As you stated in the letter, "The inequities that communities of color have faced by the COVID-19 crisis has only expanded the need to create better-supporting structures for them. Our communities are struggling on multiple levels, including economically and with mental and physical health. This moment of crisis calls for solutions that will build toward a more equitable future."
Now, more than ever, we should be championing measures that help people of color, marginalized people and rural communities access the tools to care for their mental health.
Representative Bynum's letter proposes the following solutions: 1) Allow mental health interns on insurance panels so they can bill insurance, 2) Reduce the direct hourly requirement for full licensure to 1,200 hours and 3) Develop a COVID-19 Mental Health Relief Fund.
