The Industrial Painters of the Water Bureau (Mark Edwards, Ival Castle, Shon Ponder, and Tom Woodward) completed the painting one of the Water Bureau's largest tanks at Kelly Butte off of SE Powell Boulevard. It is a steel tank and has a capacity of 10 million gallons. They painted the roof last fall, but due to the weather were not able to paint the sides. They completed painting the sides in August.
The existing exterior paint contained lead so it required extensive precautions in the removal process. Special bio-enviromental tarps caught lead chips.OSHA praised the Water Bureau for doing an excellent job in the biggest lead abatement project ever taken on by the bureau. Twenty-six 50-gallon barrels of lead paint were removed. The tank has been plagued by grafitti, which encompassed the entire tank.
It took the painters two weeks to remove the paint using a 6,300 psi pressure washer, but only 3 days to apply the primer and two coats of paint. The tank now looks beautiful. It is located on the east side of the 205 freeway, just north of S.E.Powell Blvd. 9805 is the address, but it is hidden in the trees, up the hill behind the Church of the Nazarene.

Mark, Shon, Ival, and Tom, it's wonderful to see a picture of you in front of that huge tank you painted. You did a great job in controlling lead and prepping and painting the top and sides of our biggest steel tank. It looks fantastic!
