Water Bureau Unveils New Toilet Rebate Program - Printable Version - January 2, 2009 - 21 Comments

THIS PROGRAM ENDED 04/2009 WHEN FUNDS WERE EXHAUSTED!

Get your toilet rebate quick!Effective 1/1/09, Portland Water Bureau customers are invited to take advantage of a new toilet rebate program sponsored by the Water Bureau for a limited time. Customers can apply for a $100 rebate for replacing a traditional toilet (1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or more) with a newer, more water-efficient model that has been labeled WaterSense, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

To earn the EPA's WaterSense label, toilets must use no more than 1.28 gpf and meet rigorous performance criteria.

The bureau is conducting the program until funds are depleted or until June 30, 2009.

To receive the rebate:

  • Applicant must fill out a WaterSense Toilet Rebate Form and return to the Portland Water Bureau no later than June 30, 2009.
  • Applicant must receive water from the Portland Water Bureau and have an active Portland Water Bureau account that is in good standing.
  • Applicant must own the property where the new toilet is being installed or obtain the signature of the property owner on the rebate form.
  • There is a limit of 2 toilet rebates per eligible account.
  • Each rebate is worth $100.
  • Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

I am filling out my rebate now, I just bought my toilet at ecohaus.

Does anyone know if there are federal or state tax deductions available for this?

Posted by: Sarah Santner - January 26, 2009 09:34 AM

Hi there,
There are not currently tax deductions available for replacing a toilet.

Does anyone have experience with how well these perform.

I live in a condo.  I own the condo, but the water is paid by the association.  Can I get a rebate?

Posted by: jeff glowacki - January 28, 2009 09:58 PM

How much does the toilet cost without the rebate?

Posted by: Sarah Santner - January 29, 2009 12:00 PM

Hi there - here are answers to the last three posts:

KS - I have personally flushed a few different HET models and found them quite effective. More importantly than my own experience, in order to qualify for the WaterSense label these toilets are run through an independent performance test.  In order to make the list the toilet must flush a minimum of 350 grams of waste (that's a fair bit).

Gail - The program is set up to allow each account only two rebates. So if your association is willing to let you be one of the two - then they could pass the rebate onto you. The check will be made out to the name listed on the account.

Jeff - HET toilets are a category with a wide range of brands and prices.  I know that they can be purchased for as little at $100.

We are looking at a toilet that uses 1.6 gallons/flush, but it isn't on your list, does it still qualify for the rebate?

Posted by: Carl - February 08, 2009 07:53 PM

OOOps! the toilet only uses 1.28 gals. Sorry! Same question, is it ok for the rebate?

Posted by: Sarah Santner - February 09, 2009 10:17 AM

Hi Carl - you need to check to see if the toilet you are interesed in is WaterSense certified. Visit -  http://www.epa.gov/watersense/index.htm for a list.

Do you need a plumbing permit to replace a toilet?

Posted by: Khanh - March 06, 2009 08:17 AM

Dear Sarah,

HomeDepot carries a Glacier toilet that has WaterSense label on it; however, it was not on the list of EPA (http://www.epa.gov/watersense/pp/find_het.htm).  Is it still qualified for the rebate?  It's only $98, much affordable compare to other brands.  Or should I wait until the EPA updated their list?

Thanks,

Khanh

bummer. As of May 4th, 2009, the rebate fund has been depleted, so no more rebates.

Posted by: Jennie Day-Burget - May 26, 2009 03:31 PM

You are correct, Jimmy. Sorry you missed out.

Posted by: Michael R - June 15, 2009 09:10 AM

Bought the toilet two months ago, just installed yesterday.  Hope it is not too late to get a rebate.

Hey, nice spam control method!

Will this program be extended? I seemed to have missed it.
