Safety

While all these routes are walkable, walkers need to take care especially on those off-street paths and trails. Some are steep and can be slippery when wet.
  • Walk against traffic on roads with no sidewalks.
  • Use the crosswalk.
  • Wear brightly colored clothing.Watch out for turning vehicles.
  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
  • Establish eye contact with drivers.
Note for  wheelchair users: While many streets do have curb ramps, this map does not have adequate information on a route's suitability for wheelchair users.

Walking Tips

Whether you are considering walking for your health or the health of the environment, walking is the no-gear sport and an easy way to squeeze exercise into your day. Just 30 minutes of walking every day significantly reduces your risk of heart disease and diabetes and can = 15 lb. of weight loss per year!

Around the neighborhood A lot of the trips we take are right in our own neighborhood. Walking to the market, library or park is a great way to get to know your neighborhood. You can walk to your closest library in Portland in 25 minutes and closest park in only ten minutes from home.

To work On a cool summer morning, try walking to work. You may find that it’s closer than you think. If you know it’s too far, try walking to the next bus stop or transit station instead of driving.
