POL Government Bureaus & Offices Transportation Getting Around Portland Transportation Options Bicycles Bicycle Signal at Interstate and Oregon
WHAT A new bicycle-only traffic signal was turned on this morning at the intersection of Interstate Avenue and Oregon Street (at the east end of the Steel Bridge). The signal features bicycle-shaped green, amber and red lights and is designed to serve cyclists exiting the Eastbank Esplanade and entering the roadway, either heading north on Interstate or east on Oregon (toward the Convention Center). All automotive movements are stopped when the bicycle signal is green. See below for a gallery of photos.

HOW To get a green, cyclists must position themselves over the “bike loop” marking on the sidewalk until the bicycle signal turns green (the marking is lettered to read: “Wheels Here”). All automobiles are stopped, including motorists from the Steel Bridge who wish to turn right onto Lloyd Boulevard-a “No Turn on Red” sign is activated when the bicycle signal is green. Directions for operating the signal are also provided on a sign placed at the intersection.

Except for the words “Wheels Here” the loop marking is the same as that used at some signalized intersections in Portland. Wherever you see one of these, position your wheels over the lines and you will trigger the traffic signal to turn green.

WHY To make it easier for cyclists to diagonally cross the intersection to access the northbound bicycle lane on Interstate Avenue, and to eliminate the conflict between right-turning motorists and eastbound cyclists.

WHERE The bicycle signal itself is located on a pole at the northeast corner of the intersection.
PLEASE Use the signal to cross the intersection and tell us what you think.
