Have fun and travel smart with SmartTrips North-Northwest!

What moves around the City offering fun programs and activities celebrating Portland as one of the most livable cities in the US? It's called SmartTrips and it visits different Portland neighborhoods every year. SmartTrips is a comprehensive approach to reduce drive-alone trips and increase biking, walking, public transit ridership, carpooling, car sharing and combining trips.  Key components include biking and walking maps and organized activities which get people out in their neighborhoods to shop, work, and discover how many trips they can easily, conveniently and safely make without using a car.

In 2009 the SmartTrips North-Northwest area included Cathedral Park, Forest Park, Hillside, Linnton, Northwest District, Northwest Heights, Northwest Industrial, Overlook, Pearl District, Portsmouth, St. Johns, and University Park neighborhoods.

The SmartTrips North-Northwest Order Form was mailed to every household between April & May 2009. The order form offered many resources to help area residents discover the ease of getting around Portland by foot and by bike, transit or carpool.

For the sixth year in a row, Transportation Options partnered with Kaiser Permanente to offer the Ten Toe Express walking campaign. SmartTrips Northwest residents were able to order a free walking kit complete with a pedometer, a short-tripper coupon book for discounts at local businesses and a schedule of guided walks highlighting areas of interest in the community. Options also offered Senior Strolls, shorter walks on weekdays for seniors who want to stay active and experience great Portland neighborhoods.

Portland By Cycle and the Women on Bikes programs led guided bike rides and clinics on how to bike for everyday trips.  A free bike kit was also offered, including the short-tripper coupon book and other essential resources for the new or seasoned cyclist.

Residents could also see the Options Mobile, a colorfully wrapped hybrid car, at local neighborhood and street fairs and farmers markets throughout the spring and summer.

In 2010 SmartTrips Green Line will come to East Portland and serve at least a portion of each of the following neighborhoods: Sumner, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Hazelwood, Mill Park, Powellhurst-Gilbert, Lents, Brentwood-Darlington, Mt Scott-Arleta, Foster-Powell, South Tabor, Montavilla, Madison South, Pleasant Valley
