Biking is Back - The Older Adult Three-Wheeled Bicycle Program

Seniors, Stop Your Engines!

A happy rider Are you a senior considering trying out bicycling for the first time? Or perhaps you just haven’t ridden a bicycle in a few years (or decades). Then the Portland Parks & Recreation Biking is Back (Older Adult Three-Wheeled Bicycle Program) is the perfect way to get started with bicycling.

The free biking classes are held along the beautiful Willamette Greenway Trail in SW Portland. The Willamette Greenway serves as an ideal class location for seniors trying out a bicycle for the first time, being a tranquil, beautiful and car-free riverfront setting.

Interested participants do not need to own a bicycle to take part in the class rides, as the City of Portland provides three-wheeled recumbent trikes and bike helmets for the classes. Seniors can simply book a class, try out the trikes, and take the opportunity to have their questions and concerns about cycling answered.

In the first year of the program the classes convinced SE Portland residents Fran and Rod Daggett that the three-wheeled bikes could be feasible transportation alternatives for short errands, and for getting some exercise in their neighborhood. "When I was a kid I used to believe heaven was eating ice-cream and riding a bike" recalls Fran. "Any time I could have the opportunity, I would ride one of the bikes", she adds.

For more information please call class coordinator Kristine Canham, Senior Recreation Coordinator for Parks at 503-823-4328.
