SmartMeter Technology - Printable Version

A SmartMeter is a solar-powered, multi-space parking meter. It’s easy to use, modern, tough, and smart. It operates essentially like a parking meter, but replaces a block of single-space meters. It works well even on our rainy, gray days. And its two-way communication will alert the City of a technical problem immediately.

It features an electronic display that provides the parking customer with transaction information, an electronic clock that shows the time of day, user instructions, and a button-operated card transaction feature. It has a printer that produces a receipt for display in your vehicle.

Pay stations are a proven and successful technology. Schlumberger, the manufacturer of the machine Portland is using, has installed over 100,000 pay stations worldwide and over 3,000 in the U.S. and Canada. SmartMeters are used in Aspen, CO; Berkeley, CA; Houston, TX; Mesa, AZ; New York City and Savannah, GA; and Miami, FL. They are also used in Toronto and Calgary, and extensively in Europe.

Payment Options

SmartMeters accept many options: coins (nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar coins), credit/debit cards, and smart cards.

A smart card is a credit-card-sized plastic card with a smart chip embedded in it. The smart chip holds information in electronic form – in this case, electronic money. The card can be reloaded when you want to purchase more parking time.

Cards may be reloaded at the Portland Building, 1120 SW 5th Ave, 8th floor or call (503) 823-7733.
