Healthy Home: Keep Cool for Free - July 12, 2011

Family eatingSummer is finally here and as our homes warm up, so does the temptation to use more energy by turning on fans or air conditioners. Here are some easy ways to cool down without flipping any switches.

  • Keep a dampened bandana in the refrigerator and tie it (loosely) around your neck. It will instantly make you feel cooler. Repeat as desired.
  • Close windows, blinds and doors during the day to keep hot air and sun out. Open up the house at night and in the early morning to let the cool air in.
  • Avoid using the oven and stove. This is a great time to explore new recipes that don't require heat. Think of it as a picnic and try making veggie salads, sandwiches and dips.
  • Go somewhere else. Libraries, community centers, parks and theaters are great places to beat the heat. Plus, you'll have fun at the same time!
