Adopt A Bench Program

Ornamental bench

 Standard bench

Portland Parks & Recreation has created this program to provide people with the opportunity to contribute to the beauty and enjoyment of Portland's parks by adopting and refurbishing existing park benches. This is also an opportunity for people to honor loved ones or celebrate joyous occasions. Your donation will be used to refurbish an existing bench and install a recognition plaque (the cost of the plaque is not included in the donation amount).

Standard Bench

This bench is used in the majority of our parks. It is 6' long with 2" x 3" wood boards on a contoured steel frame with wood arm rests. Refurbishing this bench includes replacing the boards and repainting the frame. The donation for refurbishing a standard bench and installing the recognition plaque is $2,000.

Ornamental Bench
The 8' wood bench has a cast iron frame with a rose emblem on the arm rest. These benches are used in Council Crest Park, Holly Farm Park, Ladd's Circle Park, Terwilliger Parkway, Washington Park Rose Garden, and Waterfront Park. Refurbishing this bench includes replacing the boards and repainting the frame. The donation for refurbishing an ornamental bench and installing the recognition plaque is $3,200.

Recognition Plaque
If a plaque is desired, the donor is responsible for purchasing a plaque that meets PP&R standards and for any repair or replacement costs of the plaque. PP&R will install the plaque in a concrete base. The p
laque must be bronze and must include 3" brass all-thread lugs with brass nuts. The plaques can be no larger than 5" x 8". We can refer you to a local foundry for production of the plaque.

Wording on Recognition Plaques
The Adopt A Bench Program is intended to increase public enjoyment of Portland's parks, therefore wording for the plaque should have a positive tone. Donors are encouraged to choose messages that are uplifting, inspirational or promote enjoyment of the park area in which the bench is located. The recognition plaque is
not intended to serve as a replacement for appropriate memorial markers. Dates indicating the lifetime of a deceased person or persons are not permitted. Messages should be very simple statements recalling the event or person memorialized: messages of a private nature and acronyms are not permitted, as members of the public may wrongly interpret them. Wording in languages other than English is permitted.

The Adopt A Bench Program Coordinator must approve final wording before the order is submitted.

CONDITIONS

Life Cycle of Donation
PP&R will maintain the refurbished bench only for its expected life cycle. Because park benches only last for a matter of years before requiring complete refurbishment, adopted benches may become available for renewal after 10 years, with preference given to the original donor.

If current information is on file, the donor will be given the opportunity to take further action at the expiration of the original life cycle. If we are unable to contact you or you choose not to renew - and there are not other benches in that park available for adoption, the plaque will be removed and the bench will be offered to a new donor. It is important that the donor always keep their contact information current with PP&R.

Maintenance
The long-term care and maintenance of an adopted bench is important to both the donor and PP&R. We will determine the level of maintenance required for the bench based upon available budget funding and the type of care needed to reasonably maintain the bench.

Removal and/or Relocation
PP&R reserves the right to remove and/or relocate park benches and plaques when they interfere with site safety, maintenance or construction activities. If the donor's information is current, PP&R will notify the donor of any action that needs to be taken. In certain situations, such as safety or emergency situations, the notification may be made after the action is taken. In the event a bench must be permanently removed, PP&R will seek an alternative location. If no such location can be found, the donor's plaque can be placed on a different bench at the donor's request.
