National Night Out
Information, Forms, and Proceedures

National Night Out (NNO) is a unique community event, celebrated in the United States and Canada, that focuses on prevention of crime and drug activity, and is held the first Tuesday of August every year.  This year, NNO falls on August 4th.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

  • Heighten community awareness of crime and drug prevention
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  • Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
  • Promote emergency preparedness awareness

Want more information?  Visit the links at the left of this page, keep checking back as more is added to this site, or call your Crime Prevention Coordinator

  1. Would you rather have your party on a different date than Tuesday, August 4th (the official day of NNO 2009)? That's fine. Parties happening between July 28th and August 9th can be registered as official NNO events. However, most people throw their parties on the official day.

  2. Do you need to close the street for your party? If so, call your neighborhood coalition. Street closures are free for registered NNO parties.

  3. Do you want to hold your party in a park? If so, fill out a Parks Limited Use Permit Form for National Night Out attach insurance information, and submit to the address at the top of the form. There are no fees for registered NNO parties. If you are holding a party that does not fit the criteria on this form, contact parks directly at 503-823-2516 - be sure to mention that this is a National Night Out party.

  4. Do you plan to make a little extra noise? If you plan to have amplified music, or use a bullhorn, you will need a noise variance. There are no fees for registered NNO parties, and the information for the variance is collected when you register your party here at the ONI website. Your information will automatically be submitted to the noise control office.

  5. How do you feel about the media knowing about your event and having your contact information? Sometimes, small community newspapers want to publish lists of parties to help get the word out to neighbors. Also, TV crews and big newspapers sometimes want to visit parties.  If you do NOT want us to release information about your party to the media, please be sure to indicate that on the registration form.

  6. Are you open to having other community members to attend your event?  We often have people contact us looking for a National Night Out party in their area to attend.  If you do not want your information published, be sure to indicate that on the registration form.

  7. Do you want police officers and/or fire fighters to visit your party? We give lists of parties to both the police precincts and the fire stations. The police are committed to having an officer visit every National Night Out party happening on Tuesday, August 5th. If your party is held on one of the other official National Night Out party days, the police will make every effort to have an officer stop by your event. (NNO official party days are from July 28-August 9.)  If you would like a visit from a Police specialty unit, such as Mounted Partol or K-9, please note it on your registration form.  Fire stations have fewer personnel, and it is not possible for them to visit every party. If you would like firefighters to visit your party, please check the box on the registration form.  They will accommodate as many requests as possible.

  8. Is your party inclusive of people with varying abilities and needs?  Hosts are encouraged to think about those neighbors that might have special needs when planning for National Night Out.  If you have questions about how to accommodate neighbors' with disabilities, contact the Disability Program Coordinator at 503-823-2036.
