SNOWCAP PLANS THANKSGIVING MEAL,

SEEKS TURKEY DONATIONS, BLANKETS

SnowCap Community Charities has made its early holiday wish list and has checked it twice.

Atop the Thanksgiving goal are turkeys followed by warm winter blankets and a supply of grocery bags.

SnowCap is now planning its traditional "turkey and trimmings" Thanksgiving dinner for low-income families and individuals. The annual free dinner event is again scheduled at the Rockwood United Methodist Church, 17805 SE Stark Street, from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26.

SnowCap is a philanthropic organization created to provide food, clothing, advocacy and other services in much of east Portland, Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village and Troutdale.

"Frankly, we have more trimmings than turkeys right now," says Judy Alley, SnowCap executive director.

She is hopeful of receiving sufficient donated turkeys to meet the anticipated number of diners on Thanksgiving Day and also to provide food for hungry families.

Alley hopes shoppers will buy two turkeys, one for their families and one for the SnowCap family.

"People who would like to donate a turkey for a needy family should bring the bird to our warehouse and receiving center at 17788 SE Pine Street weekdays between 9 a.m.," Alley adds.

In addition, "Blankets are a big need right now as the weather turns to winter temperatures. Many families skimp on heating to put food on the table. Warm blankets help in many ways," she adds.

"We also can really use grocery bag donations, both paper and plastic," she says. Favored are reusable grocery bags with handles "for those who are walking from our food pantry."

Additional information on donations of turkeys, blankets or grocery bags is available by calling SnowCap at 503-674-8785 (ext 17) or emailing dolores@snowcap.org.
