The tower located at Council Crest Park was constructed in the 1950’s and was originally used for television broadcasting. The Bureau of Technology Services currently maintains the 439-foot lattice tower exclusively for supporting communication equipment for emergency services and homeland security.
In 2005, the Bureau of Technology Services commissioned Miller Consulting Engineers to undertake a structural evaluation of the tower. According to the report, the tower is stressed over its design capacity and has significant corrosion of structural elements. As a result, no additional antennas or other equipment can be installed on the tower. Because of the expense of replacing existing tower components and repainting the structure to fix corrosion problems, it was deemed more cost effective to replace the existing structure.
The new tower will be constructed immediately adjacent to the existing tower. It will utilize the existing equipment building on the site. Construction for this project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2008.
