(Note: If your application is not completed correctly you may be disqualified from further processing.)

Appointment

Appointments to positions in the City's classified service are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. Job openings in the City bureaus are filled from registers. Ordinarily, the names of the five persons highest on the register are sent to the bureau.  More names may be sent if scores are tied or statistically equal. The bureau may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs. Additional names of qualified protected group members may be sent to the bureau for consideration in filling jobs in which there exists underutilization of protected group members.

For examinations conducted on an "open continuous" basis, names are added to the eligible register from week to week as additional people take the examination. Therefore, a person's rank on an open continuous register may change from time to time either as people are hired from the register or as additional people take the examination.

Veterans Preference

Upon successful completion of a ranked list examination, a preference of five points is added to the score of a qualified veteran. Ten points are granted to those persons who qualify as disabled veterans.  Veterans Preference forms are available online. See Administrative Rule on Veterans Preference for more information.

Probationary Period

Newly hired and newly promoted employees serve a probationary period of fixed duration as the final step in the selection process to show their ability to perform the work.  See Administrative Rule on Probationary Periods for more information.

Salaries

All salaries stated on the announcement are based on present information and are subject to change.  Monthly or annual salary quotes are approximations.

Represented Employees

Employees hired into represented positions, must, after a period of time specified in the applicable labor agreement, either
  • become and remain a member of the designated union, or
  • pay a fair share of the union's costs of negotiation and administration of the contract as provided by City labor agreements.

Employee Benefits

The City provides a generous benefit program to permanent employees which includes paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave; medical, dental and vision care coverage for employees and dependents; paid life insurance and the opportunity to participate in training programs.

Pension

After 6 months of eligible service the City will pay an amount equivalent to 6% of an employee's earnings into your Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) account.  That contribution plus interest will be available to the employee upon termination or retirement. The City will also make an additional employer contribution equivalent to about 10% of employee's earnings toward employee's pension. Both the employee and the City make contributions to the Social Security system as required by law.

For Police Officers and Fire Fighters hired after July 1, 1990:  The City pays the full cost of participation in the Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Fund after 6 months of eligible service.
