River Partnerships
Rivers result from a watershed's worth of climate, landscape, and human communities. Understanding the River requires appreciating where it's been and where it's going.
The Rivers Office actively seeks out opportunities to communicate with other towns, businesses, and organizations living and working all along the River. Every interaction offers opportunities to learn different ways to approach common issues and brings new insights on how we can better work together.
The slideshow above shows some photos demonstrating how the Rivers Office is partnering for a better river. Here are a few examples illustrating our current partnerships:
- The Big Float: getting people into the River...
Between 1,000 and 2,000 people celebrated a sunny Sunday by participating in The Big Float--Portland's first annual inner-tube-based celebration of the Willamette! To see the variety of people (and floating devices), click here. To read an accounts of the day, click here.
- RiverFest: celebrating the Willamette; learning how to do more
- Honoring Our River: supporting the annual student anthology of essays, poems, and art that gives young people a river voice.
- Love Your River: an engaging, active forum to learn how to help improve our rivers.
- The Intertwine: Growing awareness of the amazing network of parks, trails and natural areas in the Portland-Vancouver area.
- Willamette River Exhibits at OMSI: The Rivers Office joined with OMSI, TriMet, and others to fund the development of new exhibits on the Willamette.
- Oregon Urban Watersheds: The Rivers Office initiated this social network site to encourage communication among practitioners of urban watershed management.
- Seaport Celebration: Recognizing the role of the working river in our economy.
- Oregon Maritime Coalition: exploring the potential for a new waterfront center to tell the story of Portland's river life.
- Groundwork Portland Green Team: supporting an environmental justice and service-learning project for young people from low-income backgrounds that will turn a brownfield to a new greenspace.
