Preparing for the threat of a power outage with safety in mind
- Do not call 9-1-1 centers to report a power outage. Phone lines should be left open for emergencies threatening life and property.
- Use only flashlights and light sticks to light your home. Stock up on extra batteries. Candles are a fire hazard, especially this time of year with Christmas trees and holiday decorations now in many homes.
- Use extreme caution if you plan to utilize a wood-burning fireplace to heat your home. A Christmas tree or stockings too close to the fireplace can ignite from a spark. In addition, keep the flu open after burning wood or presto logs in your fireplace to minimize your risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Stock up on blankets and stocking caps to keep warm.
- Never bring outdoor cooking (BBQ) or heating equipment (charcoal briquette, propane, or kerosene, etc.) inside your home due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Automatic garage door openers and cordless phones are reliant upon electricity and will not work in a power outage. Familiarize yourself and family with the manual override and have a back-up plan for communications.
- Check your smoke alarm before going to bed tonight to ensure that it is working in case of fire. Smoke alarms that are hard-wired into a home's electrical system will not work if they do not have a battery back-up.
- Have a manual can opener and food that you do not need to heat.
- Treat non-working traffic signals as a four-way stop.
