Summer Finally Arrives in Portland, and It Brings the Heat!

The first week of July will bring hot summer temperatures to the Portland area. The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement about the coming heat.  While not the hottest temperatures we have experienced, the significant increase and multiple days will make it hardest for elderly, young children and pets.  To learn more about what you can do go to our Hot Weather Safety Tips or use the links to the right!

This is the perfect time to gather together and discuss your emergency plans or go through and make sure your disaster kit will sustain you for many days.  For preparedness information for you and your family, please follow this link to our Preparedness Resources

Ready. Safe. Go - Another Great Year

On April 25th, volunteers and community members gathered together to learn new skills and honor the accomplishments of neighbors at the annual Ready Safe Go event.  Warner Pacific College hosted the event and Portland's Fire Bureau, Police Bureau, Office of Emergency Management and Office of Neighborhood Involvement came together to provide interesting and educational presentations.

The Office of Emergency Management honored:

Portland Fire Bureau's staff - instructors and administrators - that have supported the Neighborhood Emergency Team training in Portland these many years. A number of these individuals believe in the program so much that they are NETs as well!

pdxPrepared.net - a web forum developed and hosted by the volunteers that have taken the NET training and wanted to provide an online community to develop an even more capable cadre.  The volunteers efforts go beyond the basic training and have created a network that will be even more capable to help their neighbors in an emergency or disaster!

Northwest Industrial Neighborhood Association - the Association's emergency preparedness serves as an example to the City for "private sector" efforts in disaster mitigation and the ability to respond in emergencies.  Besides the preparedness fairs, training and education they have had, they encourage further development of the businesses and their employees.  The group was instrumental in building amateur radio kits that are housed at each Fire House.

Hummer Owners Preparing for Emergencies - or H.O.P.E, a group of volunteers affiliated with American Red Cross, braved the elements along with the NETs to provide assistance during the winter storm.  For hours, they performed welfare checks, delivered food, picked up stranded bus drivers, transported essential City employees and more.  A group of trained and prepared volunteers, they came to help the community when so many where not willing to go out.
