PORTLAND MULTNOMAH YOUTH CORPS
What is Youth Corps?
The Portland Multnomah Youth Corps is a four-year series of interventions for targeted high school students during the crucial summer months. The goal of the Youth Corps is to boost graduation rates by linking academic support with college and career. Each year, students will receive progressively more intensive academic support and career experiences as they move toward graduation and into higher education, training, and jobs.
Students can participate in Youth Corps at various stages of high school.
Career & College Opportunities Focused on incoming 9th graders
Participate in weekly career and college visits along with volunteer “coaches” to start focusing on what is takes to get the high-skill, high-wage jobs of the future.
Internships Focused on rising 10th graders
Receive free summer credit recovery plus job skills training to participate in paid internships in local government, non-profits, and private industry.
Work Experience Focused on rising 11th /12th graders and beyond
Participate in a comprehensive summer employment program in partnership with WorkSystems, Inc. Program elements to include basic skill remediation, credit recovery, work experience, and career and college exposure.
What is happening this summer?
Youth Corps will launch this summer, with 500 academic-priority students participating in career and college visits across the city.
We will also pilot our internship program, providing 35 students an opportunity for credit recovery and job skills training as well as a 6-week paid internship with the City of Portland.
