Many thanks to the Oregon Cultural Trust for organizing the Oregon Day of Culture on October 8th. October is National Humanities Month and what better way to kick it off than designating a statewide day of cultural celebration! Click here: Oregon Day of Culture for links to exhibits, performances, and cultural events throughout our state.

The Oregon Cultural Trust is a statewide cultural plan to raise significant new funds to invest in Oregon's arts, humanities and heritage. Funds will be distributed to local communities to support their cultural priorities, through competitive grants for projects of regional and statewide significance and through grants to Oregon's statewide cultural agencies to support their ongoing efforts.

The Oregon Cultural Trust was created by civic, business and cultural leaders to preserve and strengthen every aspect of Oregon culture. Its goal is to create a protected endowment of more than $200 million to provide long-term support for culture in Oregon. While the endowment grows, the Trust will invest in:

  • Grants to county and tribal planning groups for cultural activities and priorities, helping them shape programs that increase access to culture.
  • Grants to expand and stabilize cultural organizations throughout the state.
  • Funding for cultural agencies to strengthen programs and support new partnerships (Our partner agencies are the Oregon Arts Commission, the Oregon Council for the Humanities, the Oregon Heritage Commission, the Oregon Historical Society and the State Historic Preservation Office.)

Mayor Adams, a stronge supporter of our State's Arts and Culture efforts, is proud to proclaim October 8th the Oregon Day of Culture. You can read the Proclamation below:

Proclamation for Oregon Day of Culture on October 8th

Whereas, the month of October has been recognized as National Arts and Humanities Month by thousands of arts and cultural organizations, communities, and states across the country, as well as by the White House and Congress for more than two decades; and

Whereas, October 8th marks the anniversary of Oregon’s unique culture tax credit; and

Whereas, heritage, arts and humanities embody much of the accumulated wisdom, intellect, and imagination of humankind; and

Whereas, heritage, arts and humanities enhance and enrich the lives of every American; and

Whereas, heritage, arts and humanities play a unique role in the lives of our families, our communities, and our country; and

Whereas, the nonprofit cultural industry also strengthens the U.S. economy by generating more than $166.2 billion in total economic activity annually and by supporting the full-time equivalent of over 5.7 million jobs; and

Whereas, events celebrating all these positive attributes will take place in Oregon from October 1st through October 8th 2009;

Now, therefore, I, Sam Adams, Mayor of the City of Portland, “City of Roses,” do hereby proclaim Thursday, October 8, 2009 as

Oregon Day of Culture

and call upon our residents to celebrate, participate in and give to Oregon culture in our community and, specifically, to take action for heritage, arts and humanities in our towns and cities.
