Family Friday Showcase Launches Festival Making Musicians

 

What:    Family Friday Concert, a free event for all ages

 

Where:   Community Music Center, 3350 SE Francis Street, Portland, 97202

 

When:    Friday, March 15, 2013, at 7:15 pm.

 

Cost: Free with suggested donation of $5.00 ($15 for a family of any size).  Fresh popcorn, snacks, and refreshments are sold at the door for a minimal price.  NOTE: limited seating, no reserved seats – doors open at 6:30; house opens at 6:50 pm.

The Family Friday Series features popular local musicians and is proudly sponsored by Larkins Vacura, LLP,Trial Attorneys.  Concerts are run by volunteers, and all proceeds benefit scholarships and other programs at the Community Music Center (CMC).  From beginning level students just staring grade-school to high-school-age virtuosos, the March 15 concert will show attendees a musical glimpse at the variety and quality of the Community Music Center’s programs.  Performers include Suzuki group violin class students of Elizabeth Peyton, Suzuki group cello class students of Jon Cheskin, viola choir students of Cynthia Scott, The Center Singers youth choir directed by Mark Woodward, and two chamber music ensembles, coached by David Kerr and Andrew Ehrlich.

The March 15 Family Friday concert begins CMC’s Making Musicians Festival of two dozen concerts this spring, showcasing the students and faculty of the Community Music Center, and raising funds for need-based music scholarships.  (See full schedule below.)  Sponsorships may be made online, over the phone, or in person at the Community Music Center.   Donations go to the non-profit Community Music Center, Inc. and are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

15    Family Friday Concert Series - CMC Showcase.  A concert featuring talented students of theCommunityMusicCenter.  7:15pm. Free Admission. Sponsored by Larkins Vacura.

16    CMC End of Term Concert featuring CMC choirs, classes, and private lesson students. 1:30pm.

 

APRIL

13    Cello Recital featuring students of Katherine Schultz. 5:00pm.

14    CMC Chamber Music Master Class.  2:00pm

20    Violin Recital featuring students of Elizabeth Knopp. 3:00pm.

27    CMC Faculty Showcase - The talented faculty of Community Music Center present a concert to benefit students in need.  Proceeds from the concert go toward the CMC Scholarship fund.  7:30pm.  Sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

The Community Music Center (CMC) is a Portland Parks & Recreation facility in partnership with an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that raises money to help subsidize tuition fees at the school.  It serves families across the Portland area and supports those with limited economic means by increasing access to music performances and educational opportunities.  Benefit concerts such as this one support a need-based scholarship fund that enables students to follow their dreams in music.  For more information, call 503-823-3177 or visit www.communitymusiccenter.org.
