As Commissioner in charge of the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications, I’ve learned much about the job of a 9-1-1 telecommunicator. In September, I spent a night shadowing a telecommunicator, an experience that showed me firsthand the high degree of professionalism of these emergency first responders who are often “invisible” to the Portlanders they assist.
With this in mind, I wanted to share an article that appeared last week in The Washington Post. Director Lisa Turley sent me this article, which highlights many of the same issues we are working to address here in Portland. Lisa and all staff at the Bureau are developing potential approaches and solutions. Check out the article here: http://wapo.st/19rJalN
And, I hope you’ll join me in sending a big thank you to the 9-1-1 telecommunicators who help to keep Portland safe.
