Charlie Hales and Steve Novick plan swearing-in ceremonies

December 26, 2012 | Oregonlive.com-- Portland Mayor-elect Charlie Hales and Commissioner-elect Steve Novick will be sworn in next week in separate ceremonies.

Hales, who takes over from Mayor Sam Adams as soon as the new year starts, will be sworn in officially at a private ceremony at his home on New Year's Eve.

City Hall is closed for the New Year's Day holiday, so Hales' public ceremony will take place Jan. 2 at 9:30 a.m. in city council chambers.
Novick, who recently moved to Multnomah Village, will be sworn in at the Multnomah Arts Center on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. (Trivia: Commissioner Amanda Fritz held her swearing-in ceremony at the arts center in 2009.)

Why two ceremonies for Hales?

In the event of a police or other emergency, Hales needs to have authority to act. But, like Adams before him, he opted to delay the public ceremony. (Adams held his on Jan. 5, 2009 at Parkrose High School.)
