Mayor Adams issued his first Proclamation today, making January Radon Awareness Month.  Three citizens testified on the topic.  I learned that radon is present at toxic levels in many Portland homes, due to its storage in granite deposits in the bedrock below.  Testing costs less than $25, and is as easy as leaving the test can open for two days, then mailing it in.  Remediation is usually $1,500 - $2,500.  That's expensive, but not as much as medical care for cancer.  And living is often fun.

January is Radon Awareness Month.  Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer.  More people die of lung cancer than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. 

Radon test kits can be purchased in a variety of settings, including Fred Meyer/Home Depot stores, private organizations, and through organizations such as the American Lung Association of Oregon.  They are able to sell the kits for $11.00 (includes shipping and handling) instead of the retail rate of around $20 since they purchase in bulk and as a nonprofit.  Apply here.
