We reached our 1,000 Gardens goal! - October 24, 2012

No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth,

and no culture comparable to that of the garden.

- President Thomas Jefferson

Join Nick, the Portland City Council, and our Community Garden partners to celebrate the successful completion of our 1,000 Gardens initiative at City Hall today at 9:30.

The 1,000 Gardens initiative sprung from the City's Climate Action Plan, which included a goal to increase the consumption of local food.  To help create a more healthy Portland, the City vowed to develop or facilitate 1,000 new community garden plots by the end of this year.

Now, thanks to the efforts of our non-profit partners, businesses, public schools, and community members, we have reached our goal.  1,000 new gardeners can now enjoy the benefits of growing their own organic, sustainable, low-cost, healthy food.

The celebration appropriately lands on National Food Day, a nationwide celebration and movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.

Portland Parks & Recreation's Community Gardens Program staff will share the 1,000 Gardens story, and explain how these community garden plots will help improve the long-term health of our community, and the health of our planet for years to come.
