Spirit of Portland recognizes the Weed Warriors - October 9, 2012

We're proud to announce that our partner and friend, the Friends of Mt. Tabor Park Weed Warriors, have won a 2012 Spirit of Portland Award!

The Weed Warriors will receive the Sandy Diedrich Award for Environmental Stewardship, an award established in 2010 to honor the founder of the No Ivy League.

The Spirit of Portland awards are a 28-year-old tradition, recognizing groups and individuals who have made a difference in our community.

Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who leads the Office of Neighborhood Involvement's award process said, "The Spirit of Portland awards are Portland's Oscars. They are a tribute to the many amazing community and neighborhood leaders who contribute to our thriving civic life in Portland."

The Weed Warriors spend three hours in the park every Saturday removing invasive species, and helping preserve the native habitat of this favorite Portland park.

"We offer heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved award," says Mike Abbaté, Director of Portland Parks & Recreation. "The Weed Warriors are vital to helping the City protect and improve the environmental function of Mt Tabor. Portland Parks & Recreation is deeply appreciative of all their work."

Two great groups have also been given awards, straight from Commissioner Fish himself! The Grant High School Community Garden Team and University of Portland Women’s Soccer Team will be recognized for their great work.

Award recipients will be honored at a ceremony on October 29 at 7 pm at the Doubletree Hotel by the Lloyd Center.
