Brews for Healthy Rewards - September 4, 2012

Story by Abby Warren

Admittedly, the title of this story could be slightly misleading. While beer may not yet have been proven to provide health benefits for our bodies, it can provide Healthy Rewards for neighbors in need!

The Healthy Rewards program at Lents International Farmers Market (LIFM) increases the purchasing power of low-income shoppers to buy fresh, local and healthy produce while supporting small farms in our region. By matching shoppers' EBT funds, the program incentivizes nutritious buying practices and combats food insecurity.

Healthy Rewards got started this season with generous donations from New Seasons Market and Bob's Red Mill. However, as crowds at the LIFM have nearly doubled since 2011 (wow!), this important program is unfortunately almost out of funds.

Where does beer play into this? Thanks to generous Pacific Northwest breweries, every Sunday through October when you sit down for a pint at the LIFM's beer garden, all the dollars you spend on brews will go directly to supporting the Healthy Rewards program.

If you can't make it to the market, stop by the BeerMongers in SE Portland every Sunday evening through October. One tap will be reserved for the LIFM, with all proceeds benefitting the match program.

If you're not a beer drinker, or can't make it out on a Sunday, click here to donate to Healthy Rewards.
