PP&R's Grow Afterschool Program Introduces Kids to Healthy, Seasonal Eating and Growing
- June 12, 2012
Commissioner Fish and Portland Parks & Rec understand the importance of building healthy communities that are connected to their food and where it comes from. As we work to accomplish our goal of building 1,000 new gardens, we continue to find other ways to improve local food systems and keep Portland families healthy.
This Spring PP&R launched the pilot series of its GROW Afterschool Program. GROW Afterschool currently serves students enrolled in the federal Afterschool Meal Program at University Park and St. John's Community Centers. Students participate in tasting lessons, cooking demonstrations, and garden education to further their understanding of healthy food options in our region. Commissioner Fish joined the group recently as they learned how to make Rhubarb Jam, yum!
Keep an eye out for the Kids Cook! event happening this August.
