POL Government Elected Officials Commissioner Nick Fish
April is National Fair Housing Month - April 11, 2012

Nick was pleased to lead his fellow Council members in recognizing National Fair Housing Month at City Council this morning.  Nick read a proclamation recognizing and celebrating April as Fair Housing Month in Portland.

The proclamation calls on all Portlanders to "observe this month by joining in the effort to promote fair housing for all."

City Council also welcomed Cassiel Thom, the 2012 Fair Housing Council of Oregon Fair Housing poster contest winner.  Cassiel’s winning entry beautifully represents the contest’s theme: Fair Housing Welcomes Everyone Home.

Cassiel is a seventh grader at Metropolitan Learning Center, and enjoys photography and art.  Poster judges at the Fair Housing Council named her the winner for the second year in a row!  Cassiel’s poster will be on display with other prize-winning entries at the Beaverton City Library from April 14 – 23.

The City of Portland and its partners have made a renewed effort to focus on combating illegal housing discrimination and removing other barriers that impede housing choice.

In September 2011, City Council adopted the Fair Housing Action Plan – a set of first steps toward addressing fair housing impediments in our community.  Nick appointed community members to the Fair Housing Advocacy Committee, charged with implementing the Plan.

If you or someone you know has experienced discrimination in housing, please contact the Fair Housing Council of Oregon at (800) 424-3247 or information@fhco.org.
