EAGLE program helps send two students to college - March 8, 2012

By David Nguyen

Two Madison high school students will be attending Oregon State University this fall on Portland Parks & Recreation’s Evans Scholarships, valued in excess of $45,000.

The Winners, Jean Le and Tony Huynh, both participated in the Early Adventures in Golf for a Lifetime of Enjoyment (EAGLE) program. The program provides a unique internship through a cooperative venture between Portland Parks & Recreation and Portland Public Schools to expose students to all aspects of golf course operation.

PP&R has sponsored the EAGLE program for 20 years, providing key opportunities for hundreds of area teens. So far, 57 of the program’s participants have received Evans Scholarships during that time. Winners may choose to attend either the University of Oregon or Oregon State University. Scholarships are awarded for up to four years.

The EAGLE program is now accepting applications from qualified high school sophomores currently enrolled at Portland Public high schools. Interested parties should contact Carolyn Lee at carolyn.lee@portlandoregon.gov or 503-823-5076.

Congratulations, Jean and Tony!
