This week, the City of Portland released the names of 21 outstanding individuals and groups chosen to receive 2011 Spirit of Portland awards.
Our office is very proud to share the names of our 2011 Commissioner's Awards: this year, we will recognize East Portland advocate Tom Lewis as well as Amber Baker and the team that brought the Village Market to the New Columbia community in North Portland.
Tom's passion for Parklane Park made it the site of our very first E205 project, and his work with the East Portland Action Plan and Centennial Community Association, along with a number of other efforts, inspires us all.
Amber Baker and the team that brought the community-run Village Market to New Columbia understand that healthy food and healthy communities are connected. Before the Village Market, there was no grocery store within a mile of New Columbia, and no grocery outlet within 15 miles. Today, the market offers fresh, healthy, affordable food, along with a safe, friendly place to meet neighbors, to the 2,700 residents of New Columbia.
The East Portland Community Center will host this year's ceremony on Thursday, October 27, from 7 to 9 pm. We hope to see you there!
