Commissioner Fish to bring Fair Housing Action Plan to Council - September 13, 2011

Removing barriers to housing choice in our community is a top priority for Commissioner Fish and the Portland Housing Bureau (PHB.)

This Wednesday, September 14, Commissioner Fish will ask the City Council to adopt the City's first-ever Fair Housing Action Plan.

Every five years, we report to the federal government on the housing barriers people in our region experience. This year, for the first time, we used that report to craft a Portland-specific plan to increase housing opportunities. The report's detailed analysis helped us create the best plan for our community.

The Plan has met with praise. The Oregonian Editorial Board called it "a bold plan" and wrote that "it's especially heartening that the city is going to do something loud about [discrimination] - now and going forward."

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary John Trasvina says that he is "convinced that the city of Portland has the will and the capacity to tackle this problem."
