Story by Maddie Wiener
The Glenfair Evangelical Church on Northeast 143rd avenue and East Burnside has transformed an expansive lawn into 22 garden plots and two raised beds for residents of nearby apartments. This garden has had a very significant role in the community, bringing together a diverse group of people and numerous families.
In July 2010, David Douglas High School volunteers and Glenfair Church members built a shed and donated books and tools for the garden. Work parties this spring brought together church members and plot-holders to help expand and add finishing touches to the garden.
In a neighborhood where lots of folks are experiencing unemployment, many gardeners are first-time growers who rely heavily on their garden plot for vegetables. Beyond providing gardeners with affordable, healthy produce, this garden is bringing the community together and helping neighbors get to know each other.
