50 plots closer! - May 17, 2011

Portlanders are excited to grow their own food!

Through our Community Garden Initiative, we're working with partners to build 1,000 new garden plots by 2012. (Visit our '1,000 Gardens' blog to follow our progress and learn more about this exciting project!)

This month, we're so excited to welcome two new gardens - one brand new, one newly-expanded - to our inventory.

Last August, we worked with Depave, the West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Friends of Community Gardens to remove more than 7,200 square feet of asphalt at Vermont Hills United Methodist Church to make way for an expansion of the existing community garden.

On Saturday, May 7, a busy work party completed work on the expansion - the Vermont Hills garden now offers 14 additional 200-square foot plots for gardeners in Southwest Portland.

This past weekend, clear across town at Zenger Farm (SE Reedway and 117th), we cut the ribbon on brand new Furey Community Garden.

Zenger Farm worked closely with the Friends of Community Gardens and neighbors to design a beautiful site that complements the neighborhood.

The Furey Garden brings 36 new plots to our gardener friends in East Portland.

Congratulations to all of the partners who helped bring these two new gardens to life. Thanks to everyone's hard work, Portland is now home to 50 brand new community garden plots, and we're 50 plots closer to our goal!
