City Council was honored to welcome a group of national champions to chambers this morning, as the EastSide United Liverpool Red U18 Boys team joined us for a proclamation recognizing their recent victory at the 2010 US Youth Soccer national championship in Overland, Kansas. Joining the team were Drew Mahalic, CEO of Oregon Sports Authority, Merritt Paulson, Portland Timbers owner, and staff of the EastSide United Football Club.
It's a great time for soccer here in Portland. The City is working to bring high-quality sports facilities to youth around the city, with projects planned for Buckman Field, Roosevelt High School, and Parkrose High School. This summer, thousands of people packed Director Park and Pioneer Courthouse Square to watch World Cup broadcasts. Local college teams have won national championships, including the University of Portland Pilots. The Portland area is home to two great corporate partners - Nike and Adidas - which are global leaders in sports equipment and fantastic partners in youth sports. Major League Soccer is on the way in 2011 when the Timbers join the league.
Today, we're very proud to celebrate another milestone as we recognized the young men of Liverpool Red. Congratulations to the team and their supporters on this amazing achievement!
