Application for the Portland Commission on Disability
Anyone interested in serving on the Commission are free to turn in an application for the Commission at any time. Applications will be reviewed at Executive Committee meetings. The Executive Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month.
Positions will stay open until filled. Applications made when positions are not currently open will be kept for future consideration. Submitting an application for an open position does not automatically qualify someone for membership on the Commission.
The Bylaws of the Commission have changed to provide for 23 positions, all of which serve as at-large positions. Recruitment for open positions is conducted and announced online and in the Disability NEWS. Upon announcement, please submit an application as soon as possible.
The best application will clearly demonstrate how the applicant, through their experience and or affiliation with an organization, will bring insight and expertise to the Commission's work. Ideal candidates should be able to be the voice of people they represent to the Commission as well as the voice of the Commission back to the community. Letters of reference should support their ability to fulfill this role.
The Commission has become a focused and working group to improve inclusion and accessibility to the City's programs and services. Given that perspective, potential applicants are advised to attend one full Commission meeting and at least one subcommittee meeting of their choice prior to submitting an application. There is no need to participate, but this affords an opportunity for interested persons to observe the business and work of the Commission. Potential applicants may consider how their skills and knowledge may be best utilized in the work. Applicants who do attend the meetings as noted would receive a priority consideration by the executive committee.
