In November 2008 the City of Portland teamed up with non-profit Free Geek to take used computers from the City of Portland, refurbish them, and distribute them to non-profit organizations and individuals in need.
Over the last two years Free Geek has distributed over 1,500 desktops and laptops. Most recently Free Geek donated 10 computers to the Hacienda Community Development Corporation which are being used to help people enroll in mortgage payment assistance programs, allowing families to avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes.
“The partnership with Free Geek has exceeded my expectations,” said Commissioner Dan Saltzman who first partnered the City with the non-profit. “It has allowed so many people and non-profit organizations to have the tools they need to succeed in lean budget times and a competitive job market.”
