Historic
Prior to development along the river and the subsequent diversion of Balch Creek into the storm sewer system, the creek would have likely supported a greater diversity of resident and anadromous fish species, including chinook, coho, steelhead and cutthroat trout.
Current
The reach of Balch Creek flowing through a pipe across the terrace is a barrier to fish migration from the Willamette River (ODFW 2001). Above this reach, Balch Creek supports an isolated resident population of cutthroat trout (City of Portland Bureau of Planning, 1991).
Assessment
Processes that have led to alterations in fish communities include filling of wetlands, piping and hardening of stream channels, clearing of vegetation, and residential, transportation, and industrial development.
