Rollin' Tire Cleanup

Rollin' Tire site

This 7600 square foot site in the Lents neighborhood was once a gas station, automobile service center, and retail tire outlet.  In 1998 an Environmental Site Assessment concluded that these uses had caused petroleum contamination in the soil and water.

Site cleanup at that time included the removal of six underground storage tanks used to store gasoline and diesel, one 500-gallon underground tank used to store waste oil, and 600 tons of contaminated soil.  However, because of the site's location between a busy road, a creek, and several sewer pipes, not all impacted soil could be removed.

In 2008 the City of Portland Brownfield Program was awarded a grant from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to complete the cleanup of the site.  Planning proceded for cleanup and restoration.  A formal public comment period on site cleanup was held from March 16, 2009 to April 16 2009.  Though this comment period has now closed, questions and comments about the project are welcome and can be directed to Jenn Bildersee, (503) 823-7764, jbildersee@bes.ci.portland.or.us.

Site cleanup has begun as of September 2009 and will last for several months.  Detailed information about the property is available at the Holgate branch of Multnomah Public Library, 7905 SE Holgate.   Check back here for up-to-date information as the project moves forward!
