Recognizing the connections between food and the community’s environmental, economic, and public health, the City of Portland—through the Urban Food Zoning Code Update— strives to remove zoning code barriers to urban food production and distribution. After over a year of discussions with the community and actively working with a volunteer Code Development Advisory Group, a Discussion Draft of proposed code changes was released in early February. These proposed changes support community gardens, farmers markets, for-profit market gardens, food buying clubs, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) at a scale that is appropriate to neighborhoods and helps build community.

The report to the Planning and Sustainability Commission will be available in late March. The Planning and Sustainability Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 24th.
