(Portland, OR) On Thursday, September 30, 2010 the City of Portland will join Portland General Electric (NYSE:POR) and the Homebuilders of Metropolitan Portland (HBAMP) at a breakfast open house to celebrate completion of the first energy-efficient electric row houses built through the City of Portland's Energy Efficiency Home Pilot (PEEHP).

The event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at a home completed through the PEEHP program, located at 5105 N. Fessenden Avenue in Portland. Two row houses have been built by Terrafirma Building Inc. for Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, a non-profit community development organization.

The affordable homes have been built to be 15 and 30 percent more efficient than the 2008 Oregon Energy Code. The PEEHP is a collaboration of Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, Energy Trust of Oregon, the Homebuilders Association of Metropolitan Portland, the National Association of Homebuilders, Northwest Natural Gas, and the City of Portland.

"This grant funded project provides the affordable housing industry with efficiency strategies that are cost effective for both the builder and the homeowner", said Commissioner Randy Leonard. "Through their contributions, our private sector partners have taken a leadership role in bridging the gap between efficiency and affordability in residential construction."

"We are proud to partner with the City of Portland and Terrafirma to build affordable, energy-efficient homes that help customers save money and protect the environment," said Carol Dillin, PGE's vice president of customers and economic development. "By installing high-efficiency heat pumps in these homes we are able to add value for the builder and long-term energy cost savings for residents."

The home represents the third PEEHP grant award. Previous awards have funded natural gas-powered energy efficiency measures in a two-unit row house, and all-electric measures in detached single family homes. This award is funding innovative electric energy-efficient products in two, duplex row houses. Features include ducted high efficiency heat pumps, fresh air ventilation and heat recovery, and high efficiency Marathon lifetime water heaters.

The PEEHP will produce resources to help inform future residential construction projects, including the recording of costs associated with constructing energy efficient homes and case studies reflecting those instances of added complexity related to new energy efficiency measures.
