Director Paul Scarlett sponsored a table at this year’s recent Big Brother Big Sisters African American Mentorship Luncheon held at the Rose Quarter on September 16, 2008. The Luncheon was hosted by the organization’s Pamela Weatherspoon and was in effort to make the community aware of the need to increase the number of African American Mentors for youth.
The room was filled with many community partners, such as Nike, Portland Trailblazers, Providence, Portland Public Schools and many more. Portland Police Officer Willie Haliburton gave a riveting testimonial on the difference his Big Brother made in his life and the successes he has accomplished under the guidance and support of his Big Brother.
“The Director’s efforts in conjunction with Diversity & Community Relations Liaison Mikal Shabazz to offer the volunteer opportunity to BDS employees to participate in Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization is great and it shows that we are not just interested in building Buildings, but building Futures”, says Outreach Program Coordinator Tiffani Penson.
Thank you to employees Mike Ebeling, Sebrina Nelson-Deal (BES), Jay Ponce, Nizar Slim, Mikal Shabazz, and Tiffani Penson for representing the bureau at this event and for those of you that are already Big Brothers and Sisters.
