March 23, 2001 MEMORANDUM From: Steve Townsen RE: Catch Basins to be built "flush" on designated bike lanes
We have recently had several complaints against the City from bicyclists who had injury accidents related to the paving around catch basins in designated bike lanes. The problem is that there were abrupt edges around catch basins in designated bike lanes that caused the bicyclist to lose control. (This is a common problem particularly in areas that have been overlayed.) The inlets were depressed and there was literally no transition and that caused the abrupt edge.
The solution is that on all new projects or retrofits with designated (striped) bike lanes we
will do the following: - Don't "depress" any new inlets. Build the inlets "flush" to the street by matching the x-slope and longitudinal slope of the street.
- Adjust all existing inlets within the scope of the project that are not flush with the street to be flush.
