I.  GENERAL
 
     A.  This policy is established June 5, 2007.
 
    B.  It is the purpose of this policy to provide the procedures and process for approving a request from a building owner and/or representative to use an edition of a National Fire Protection Association Standard that is more current than adopted by the Portland Fire Code currently in effect.
 
    C.  This policy applies to Fire and Life Safety design related to new and existing construction where Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) has authority.
 
II.   SPECIFIC
 
     A.  REFERENCES
 
          1.   Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) 476.030 (3).
 
          2.  Portland City Code Title 31, 31.10.050 (F).
 
          3.  2005 Portland Fire Code 102.6.
 
III.  PROCEDURES
 
     A.  If an owner and/or representative would like to use a more current edition of a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard as it relates to work that is under the authority of the Fire Marshal, the request shall be made in writing indicating the specific standard and edition that is being requested for use.
 
     B.  The request shall indicate the nature of the work that is under consideration and that all of the requested standard will be complied with.
 
     C.  When a standard is approved for use in a given situation, that standard and edition shall be specified on the plans.
 
     D.  Where differences occur between the standard and provisions of the adopted Building, Fire and/or Mechanical codes in effect at the time, the adopted codes shall take precedence.
 
     E.  Where items III A-D are complied with the Fire Plans Reviewer is authorized to approve the use of the more current edition.
